The exhibition showcases design creations from over 40 emerging and established designers from Melbourne and Sydney.

NHJ aka Not Happy Jan has ten years of playing mixes of grumpy disco, bleepno, twinkle-house and freaked out bass jams to some of Australia’s best parties and clubs with sporadic international appearances in Thailand, Singapore, Holland, Belgium and Spain, where Jan was a participant at the Red Bull Music Academy 2008. Jan’s most recent project is the M Division record label.

Trust Fun! is a Sydney trio comprising of Jonathan & Annie Zawada and Shane Sakkeus. They work as designers for some of the most prominent fashion, music and commercial corporations worldwide, bringing unexpected artistic concepts to a commercial client base. MINK ENGINE

Mink Engine is the techno-coloured lovechild of Melbourne-based electronic musician Askii and motion graphics artist Touch Me Tiger. Together they take you on a neon ride with punchy beats and animated colour explosions. 2009 has seen them play in Shanghai at the Glamour Bar, the main stage at Good Vibrations Festival and followed up with their recent screening of their DVD Acres of Diamonds at ACMI. Elke Kramer is based in Sydney and works as an illustrator, art director and jewellery designer. Elke brings her unique aesthetic to all her design work, however, it is her line of jewellery, that has brought her international recognition and praise. ADRIAN FERNAND

Adrian Fernand is a writer born in Melbourne. With a background in the interior design, communications and event management industries; Adrian has worked as an event manager for leading luxury goods brand, Louis Vuitton and as director of a marketing, events and online strategy consultancy.

He is the author of his debut novel, The Glamour Never Stops, the social protocol and etiquette blog, I Do Believe I Came with a Hat, and is currently completing a screenplay and work-in-progress, Love in the Time of Chlamydia. He has in excess of 90 pairs of shoes.

YELLOW DIVA

David Walley’s recent work explores the concept of progression, lineage and evolution. Returning to his native Melbourne after a long sojourn in Britain provided impetus for a shift in focus. Now Design Director of Yellow Diva, the creative design studio he established in London with British architect, James Davis, David is enjoying a period of productive independence in Australia.

Willie’s career began with sign-writing and silkscreen printing with his father in London. He moved to NYC to work in the industry and in 1997 created his own company, Cursor Inc, an internationally acclaimed digital augmentation studio that provides image-retouching services for the advertising, beauty and fashion industries. VOLKER HAUG & CHRIS NASH

Designer, Volker Haug and artist, Chris Nash; both Melbourne based, are for the first time combining their ideas to create an installation of visual art/lighting. Volker was ten when he made his first light. He now designs lights for contemporary spaces utilising raw and recycled materials. Chris has been exhibiting his abstract painting, collage and photography since 2002. Having come from a performance background before this, his art is created through play, experimentation and instinct.

FLATLAND OK – TIM FLEMING

Tim Fleming’s practice covers a wide terrain as a visual artist and designer/maker. Recently Tim’s practice has focused on carpentry of small objects and modular furniture systems. Fundamental to this practice is a conceptual business operation called ‘Flatland OK’. Tim experiments with objects through hybridising functions and creating products that blur fact with fiction. A play has always existed between this flatness and the form.

Graphic designer, Tess McCabe began her career designing lovely CD covers for bands. Lamenting the lack of tangible CD artwork that accompanies digital album downloads, Tess makes paper collages inspired by the music - using common household printed material such as magazines, advertising, junk mail and wrapping paper, and fastened with thread and a glue stick.

Growing up Suzie Stanford was always collecting things from ceramic teapots to potties; making bags and macramé for the Royal Show. After graduations from University and spending ten years living in London, Suzie relocated home to Melbourne. Since then, she has worked on numerous projects creating one-off pieces including the feature French Tea Towel Chairs for the Guillaume Brahimi Restaurant at the Melbourne Crown Casino, furniture and objects for the Joe Black men’s tailoring stores, and numerous one-off light fittings for the much-acclaimed Ivy Bar, (including restaurants and private club) in Sydney.

PETER O’CONNOR

Influenced by spaghetti westerns, horse-riding cowboys, western boots and Clint Eastwood, Peter’s satchels are practical and hardwearing – they are built to stand the test of time. The satchels reflect an old-fashioned sensibility combined with an artist’s appreciation of colour and texture. Peter’s palette tends toward the earthy and natural: tans; ochres; browns; and the occasional deep blue or unexpected stop-sign red.

Paul Barbera was born in Melbourne, and completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1995. He has lived and worked abroad since 1996, spending most of his time in Amsterdam before returning to Melbourne. Paul has established himself as an interiors and fashion photographer, working with publications like View on Color, Bloom, Elle Décor, Freudin, Grazia, Vogue Living and Jalouse. He now divides his time between Australia and abroad, continuing his advertising and editorial work while also expanding into new projects that include books and exhibitions.

Nicholls+Scott is a Sydney based collaboration between industrial designers, Ross Nicholls and Greg Scott. Through their work they aim to provide an insight into the origin of products we use in our daily lives by highlighting the hand of the manufacturer, rather than the ego of the designer. They hope to encourage a shift in perception away from products as a temporary reflection of self, to products as a profound and lasting feat of human ingenuity.

MINELA KRUPIC

Minela Krupic was born in Bosnia and relocated to Australia in 1997. Having studied painting at RMIT and Printmaking at the Victorian College of the Arts, Minela creates two-dimensional works on paper including Australian iconography while reflecting the influence of her European heritage. Eastern themes and fairy-tale like surroundings show Minela’s inextricable connection to symbols and ideas that originate from her formative years.

MELANIE MARTIN

Armed with a Bachelor of Arts (Advertising; RMIT, 2005), designer Melanie Martin pursued her passion for handmade craft and 3D design, completing an Advanced Diploma of Visual Merchandising (RMIT, 2008). She currently designs displays for ‘The Stitches and Craft Show’ at Living Creatively Events.

As the inaugural POPAI Student Sustainability Design Award Winner (2008), Melanie enjoys the challenge that visual merchandising now faces: creating spaces with high visual impact; while minimising waste and reliance on environmentally harmful practices.

MELANIE BOWER

Melanie Bower is an emerging fashion designer based in Melbourne. She has a degree in Fine Art (2000) and recently graduated with a degree in Fashion Design (First Class Honours, 2007) from RMIT University, Melbourne. Melanie’s work is a result of her ongoing interest in new materials and techniques and is inspired by the fashion-making process. She strives for a balance between austerity and hedonism. Previous collections have included digital prints taken from photographs of fabric under the microscope and functional embellishment such as in-seam beading.

Marc Pascal is an independent designer and producer in Melbourne, developing and evolving an array of products that bring happiness and empower the spaces in which they find themselves. After studying Fine Art (Painting and Printmaking) at the Victoria College of the Arts and Industrial Design at RMIT, he has received grants and awards; and exhibits his work regularly. Marc is an emotive and tactile person, enjoying playing with materials, colour, and light. He works in an intuitive manner, attempting to imbue each piece with spirit and love.

Luci Everett is a freelance graphic designer living, working and drinking lots of coffee in Melbourne. She studied Communication Design (Honours) at RMIT, which she completed in 2008.
